CPE CREDITS

Continuous Professional Education

Certifications are unique. They show a commitment to life-long learning as re-certification is usually required approximately three years after each new certification. Qualifications are valid for life and do not need to be renewed (Eg. M.Sc., MBA). They differ from certifications in that they are controlled by international educational bodies and only approved centers can offer qualifications.

ASIS knows that earning your recertification credits can be difficult; particularly for those living in rural communities, those with limited professional development budgets, or those working remotely or unable to travel. But did you know that there are many low- and no-cost ways you can earn your 60 CPEs? The Certification Team has compiled suggestions below for ways to earn your CPEs without spending a lot of time, money, or travel. By no means are these the only ways to earn recertification credits! Please refer to the Recertification Guide to view other ways in which to earn CPEs.

ASIS require 60 CPE Credits for every 3 years for Re-Certification.

Mentioned below are steps to get CPE Credits

Category 1: Membership (Max. 24 CPEs)

  • ASIS membership will not only earn you 4 CPE credit each year but also gives you discounts and member-only activities that can also earn you credits.

  • Are you a member of another nonprofit security or business management-related association? Your membership can earn you recertification credits.

Category 2: Online Educational Activities (No Maximum)

Starting in 2021, ASIS members can watch live or archived webinars FREE OF CHARGE! And you have many, many webinar topics to choose from. Many certificants have earned all 60 CPE credits through the ASIS webinar series!

Category 3: ASIS Mentorship Program

Whether you are an expert in a given security sector or seeking to become one, you can earn CPEs for your work as a mentor (9 CPEs) or a mentee (3 CPES).

Category 4: Preferred CPE Provider

Almost 50 organizations have been approved to offer continuing education for ASIS certificants. These courses are pre-approved for CPE credits, which takes the guesswork out of knowing whether you will receive credit for attending. The ASIS Preferred CPE Provider Program offers organizations the opportunity to award pre-approved continuing professional education (CPE) credits for their security or business management-related continuing education offerings – and helps ASIS-certified security professionals easily identify non-ASIS activities that qualify toward their recertification CPEs.

Category 5: Volunteer Service (Max. 30 CPEs)
ASIS cannot exist without the time and expertise of our volunteers. There are many ways in which you can earn CPE credits for volunteering including being a Chapter Leader, Steering Committee Member, or a volunteer for special ASIS initiatives.

Category 6: Certification, Standards & Guidelines Program Service (Unlimited)
The ASIS Certification, Standards & Guidelines department also has frequent volunteer opportunities for those helping to advance the security management profession. Please contact us for information on volunteer options.

Category 7: Public Services (Unlimited)

Remember that your security-related pro-bono volunteer activities also count! Eligible activities include those for a charitable, religious, governmental, or community entity that are performed pro-bono. Examples include security audits of public-school buildings; security plan for fundraising march or other large activity; evaluation of emergency management for public agency.

Category 8: Other security-related certification and certificate programs
Do you hold other security-related certifications? If so, you can earn 20 CPEs provided you earned the certification during your three-year certification cycle. The PCB has approved this list of other certification programs that are eligible for CPE credit.

Category 9: ASIS Certificate Course (3.5 CPEs each)

Certificate programs are narrow in scope and combine education and an assessment. The assessment can only cover concepts taught in the related education program. While a certificate program may have a pre-requisite, there are no eligibility requirements. Certificates do not expire and do not require continued maintenance.

The courses are self-guided and take about 3-4 hours to complete. The cost for members is $150 for each course, and non-member pricing is $225 for each course.

Category 10: Global Security Exchange (GSX)

The GSX is an yearly security exhibition and conference hosted by ASIS International in collaboration with global security vendors and experts from different counties. The 3 day event is held in USA since 2017.
